Speaking Across Conflict - February 7th
Together with our partners from Resetting the Table, UMass Hillel is hosting a workshop entitled Speaking Across Conflict facilitated by Dorit Price-Levine and Rabbi David Jaffe. The goal of this workshop is to bring together a diverse group of Jewish students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst to open up the often-divisive conversation on Israel. Resetting the Table is part of the Jewish Council for Public Affair’s National Civility Initiative, which aims to transform dominant norms of communication on Israel from avoidance and antagonism toward collaborative deliberation.
The workshop will table place on Sunday, February 7th from 1-4:30 PM at the UMass Hillel House. Lunch will be provided prior to program at 12:30.
Speaking Across Conflict
This workshop will surface core issues of concern around Israel, and strengthen participants’ capacity to speak, listen and learn across disagreement. Participants will learn and practice strategies of communication that allow them to articulate their views and share their experiences effectively while inviting curiosity, collaboration, and constructive debate. These are lifelong skills transferable to many other contexts. We will spend our time practicing these skills through discussion of Israel.
What is Resetting the Table?
Resetting the Table is the outgrowth of many initiatives and partnerships led by Dr. Eyal Rabinovitch, Resetting the Table’s Founding Director, and Rabbi Melissa Weintraub, the director of JCPA’s Civility Initiative. Over the past decade, they have created programs and processes to open up the often-divisive conversation on Israel with organizations such as Hillel International, the David Project, the Avi Schaefer Fund, AJC Access, and Encounter, as well as individual JCRCs, synagogues, JCCs, and Hillels across the country.
Who Should Attend this Workshop?
If you are a Jewish student interested in participating in an inclusive, empowering forum for talking, learning, and deliberating about Israel, we encourage you to join us. This workshop will not be a space to convince others of your own opinion, but rather a microcosm of the kind of space we hope to be reflected in our larger Jewish community; a space where multiple viewpoints are welcome and students learn to listen and respect one another. All political opinions are welcome.
