New Shabbat & Holiday Meal System
WHAT'S NEW
Starting on Rosh Hashanah, students can now use your UCard to swipe for Shabbat and holiday meals at Hillel to help support your community!
WHAT'S NOT NEW
Every student who wants to eat at Hillel can still do so for free by choosing for your meal to be sponsored instead of using a swipe.
WHY THE CHANGE?
Hillel purchases Shabbat and holiday meals from UMass kosher dining, costing Hillel about $50,000 a year. Hillel is a non-profit and meals have been made possible entirely by the generous contributions of alumni, parents and other supporters. With increasing attendance at Shabbat and holiday meals, UMass Dining Services and Hillel have agreed to a new model that will offset the cost to Hillel and enable us to continue to host yummy communal meals.
WHAT IF SWIPING ON SHABBAT AND HOLIDAYS IS AGAINST MY RELIGIOUS PRACTICE?
Students who observe Shabbat and holidays traditionally can still choose to use swipes to support Hillel by having a non-Jewish greeter swipe your card, or by swiping before the holiday in the Hillel front office (you can choose to swipe for multiple meals ahead of time if you plan to attend multiple meals on Shabbat or a holiday. Any questions? Contact Rabbi Leicht at [email protected]
HOW IT WILL WORK
When you check-in before a meal at Hillel, in addition to taking attendance, you will have the option to swipe your UCard at check-in.
